Actress Eeva Litmanen and the most internationally renowned Finnish documentarist Pirjo Honkasalo are the special guests of the festival.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>J-P Valkep\u00e4\u00e4\u2019s<\/strong> long-awaited novelty <em>Dogs Don\u2019t Wear Pants<\/em> got enthusiastic reception last week at distinguished Cannes Directors\u2019 Fortnight. Pekka Strang plays a grieving husband, who seeks comfort from BDSM-dominatrix\u2019s (Krista Kosonen) strangling. Dark toned drama comedy gets its Finnish premiere at the Midnight Sun Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Actor <strong>Hannu-Pekka Bj\u00f6rkman<\/strong> won his third Finnish film award Jussi earlier this year from <em>The Human Part<\/em>. He also starred in Miia Tervo\u2019s arctic comedy hit <em>Aurora <\/em>as Aurora\u2019s alcoholic father and as a maniac cruise manager in hit tv series <em>M\/S Romantic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Festival success with her documentary films already up her sleeve, <strong>Miia Tervo\u2019s<\/strong> first feature fiction is an arctic \u2013 and romantic \u2013 drama-comedy. Critically and publicly acclaimed <em>Aurora <\/em>is lively and distinctive story about a young nail technician Aurora (Mimosa Willamo), who helps an asylum seeker and his child to find a fresh beginning to their lives in Finnish Lapland.<\/p>\n<p>In her first feature documentary, <em>Gods of Molenbeek,<\/em> <strong>Reetta Huhtanen <\/strong>sheds light on current themes through the friendship of two young boys from different cultural backgrounds. The film has been widely praised, also in international festivals. Another internationally acclaimed documentary feature, Tonislav Hristov\u2019s <em>The Magic Life of V<\/em>, is also included in the Midnight Sun Film Festival\u2019s Finnish lineup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mikko Mattila\u2019s <\/strong>documentary, <em>Mystinen mets\u00e4ty\u00f6mies<\/em>, tells the story of beloved Finnish singer-songwriter Pekka Myllykoski from cult band Freud Marx Engels &amp; Jung. The film\u2019s Finnish premiere is celebrated with a tribute concert. Another domestic premiere is <strong>Arttu Haglund\u2019s<\/strong> unusual story about yearning for freedom, <em>Gone<\/em>. Shot in different locations around the world, the film is a great example of a Finnish indie production.<\/p>\n<p>One of the founders of the Midnight Sun Film Festival, <strong>Anssi M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri,<\/strong> introduces his new film, <em>Y\u00f6n pimein\u00e4 tunteina<\/em>, in which \u201cM\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri meets Agatha Christie\u201d. One of the leading roles is played by chanter of festival\u2019s popular karaoke screenings, <strong>Iida Simes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Rauli Badding Somerjoki\u2019s divine songs are sung in this summer\u2019s karaoke screening over the soundtrack of Markku P\u00f6l\u00f6nen\u2019s film <em>Badding<\/em>. As a counterbalance to Finnish evergreens, the other karaoke screening is the modern classic of romantic musicals, <em>Moulin Rouge<\/em>. Once again the karaoke screening\u2019s have a strikingly energetic chanter <strong>Olavi Uusivirta<\/strong>, who\u2019s joined by the beautiful-voiced singer and actress <strong>Maria Ylip\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong> and the brilliant chanter duo Iida Simes and <strong>Aino Torttila<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Director of recent <em>Tolkien <\/em>biopic, <strong>Dome Karukoski<\/strong>, leads us to Tolkien\u2019s footsteps. By means of animated <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> (1978), audience sails to the deep end with Karukoski trying to make head or tail of Tolkien.<\/p>\n<p>Best known as a TV-comedienne par excellence, <strong>Eeva Litmanen<\/strong> introduces her films <em>Dolly and Her Lover<\/em>, <em>Trench Road<\/em> and <em>Kiss Me in the Rain <\/em>to the festival audience. Internationally one of the most renowned film-makers of Finland, <strong>Pirjo Honkasalo<\/strong>, has selected Carte Blanche of her own film favourites. On top of that, director-screenwriter\u2019s internationally most distinguished documentary <em>The 3 Rooms of Melancholia<\/em> and praised fiction film <em>Concrete Night<\/em>, are screened at the festival.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, Midnight Sun Film Festival shows the most interesting feature films of the past run, including Selma Vilhunen\u2019s drama <em>Stupid Young Heart<\/em>, Lapland-themed French co-production <em>Ailo \u2013 the Amazing Odyssey of a Newborn Reindeer<\/em>, multiple Jussi-award winner <em>Vacuum<\/em> and Anna Eriksson\u2019s experimental debut work <em>M<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to feature films, festival has picked fresh, exceptionally distinguished short films in its selection. Teemu Nikki\u2019s <em>All Inclusive<\/em> comes straight from Cannes to Sodankyl\u00e4 and Jarno Lindemark\u2019s <em>From Matti with Love<\/em>, which is starred by Rain Tolk and audience favourite from <em>M\/S Romantic<\/em>, Petteri Pennil\u00e4, premiere in the festival.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday morning\u2019s traditional matin\u00e9e spot of a Finnish classic is dedicated to Midnight Sun Film Festival\u2019s honorary guest of 2008, late Lasse P\u00f6ysti (1927-2019), who stars at a young age in film <em>Suomisen Olli yll\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Midnight Sun Film Festival\u2019s programme schedule is announced on Friday May 31<sup>st<\/sup> on the festival\u2019s website.
