As always, there will be themed collections presenting new documentaries about filmmakers side by side with their beloved but rarely seen classics. On top of this, there will be a selection of the most fresh and finest music films as well as some rare treats of the master classes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On top of the new cinema\u00b4s finest is the rarely undisputed winner of the Berlinare\u2019s Golden Bear award, <strong>Nadar Lapid\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Synonyms<\/em>, the autobiographical drama about the problems of a young boy, named Israeli, who emigrates to Paris. Some well-earned attention was also given to the enigmatic portrayal of a village, <em>Ghost Town Anthology<\/em>, by the French Canadian <strong>Denis Cot\u00ea<\/strong>, a guest of the Midnight Sun Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The festival will introduce another previous guest of Sodankyl\u00e4, <strong>Claire Denis<\/strong>, her sci-fi film <em>High Life<\/em> with Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche. The last giant of the French New Wave, <strong>Jean-Luc Godard<\/strong>, will be crowning his career with <em>The Image Book<\/em>, a firework of essays that confronts media and politics.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan star as a married couple in the stylish film debut of actor <strong>Paul Dano<\/strong>, <em>Wildlife<\/em>, a portrait of a family. Also representing the top of the American indie productions, is the nature-loving reflection of detachment and a story of personal growth, <strong>Debra Granik\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Leave No Trace.<\/em> From Latin America the festival will introduce the clever and thrillerish <em>Rojo<\/em>, a film from Argentinian director <strong>Benjamin Naishtat<\/strong>, that shines light to the athmosphere of the military dictatorship of the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Representing Japan is the poetically dreamlike romance film, <em>Asako I &amp; II<\/em>, by <strong>Ry\u00fcshuke Hamaguchin<\/strong>. <em>A Family Tour<\/em>, film made in exile by Chinese director <strong>Liang Ying<\/strong>, is a political family drama about the predicament of an dissident artist with dissent.<\/p>\n<p>Representing horror film will be Irish director <strong>Lee Cronin\u2019s<\/strong> Finnish co-production, <em>The Hole in the Ground<\/em>, with Kati Outinen\u2019s impressing performance in a supporting role. Another previous guest of the Midnight Sun Film Festival, Portuguese director <strong>Rodrigo Areias<\/strong> will present another Finnish co-production in its Finnish premiere, a documentary film about a fishing village in the Azores, <em>Blue Breath<\/em>. One of festival\u2019s top documentaries is <em>Honeyland<\/em> from directors <strong>Tamara Kotevska<\/strong> and <strong>Ljubomir Stefanov<\/strong>, a film about \u201dthe last female wild beekeeper\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From Eastern Europe there will also be <em>I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians<\/em>, Romanian\u2019s top director <strong>Radu Jude\u2019s<\/strong> distinctive analysis of the country\u2019s history and the present. Reviving the best traditions of Czech productions is the <em>Winter Flies<\/em>, a road movie and a comedy about personal growth by <strong>Olmo Omerzun<\/strong>, the director originally from Slovenia. Belarus, a country not so well known from it\u2019s films, will be representing with another road movie, <strong>Darya Zhuk\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Crystal Swan<\/em>, a comedy presenting a strong female lead as well as touching the theme of the prohibition on leaving the territory. The Kazakh cult film director, <strong>Adilkhan Yerzhanov<\/strong>, is on display with his colourful melodrama <em>The Gentle Indifference of The World<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masterclasses and specialties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the festival\u2019s guest film maker, <strong>Kent Jones<\/strong>, will be presenting in his masterclasses films such as <strong>Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s<\/strong> thriller <em>The Lady Vanishes<\/em>, as an expert of Kazakhstan\u2019s New Wave of the 90s, <strong>Jermek \u0160inarbajev\u2019s<\/strong> true rarity, <em>Revenge<\/em> and another classic finding restored by the World Cinema Project, <em>Touki Bouki<\/em>, a movie representing African film by the Senegalese director <strong>Dribril Djiop Mamb\u00e9tyn.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do we know about the films of the Baltic States? The artistic director of the heartfelt Riga International Film Festival, <strong>Sonora Broka<\/strong>, will be leading the audience to the joyful cult film specialties from musical films to erotic horror: included in the \u201dBaltic 101\u201d theme will be Estonian director <strong>Rainer Sarmet\u2019s<\/strong> <em>November<\/em>, Lithuanian <strong>Ar\u00fcnas Zebri\u00fcnas\u2019s<\/strong> <em>The Devil\u2019s Bride<\/em> and Latvian <strong>Vasili Massi\u2019s<\/strong> <em>The Spider<\/em> as well as <strong>Ronald Kalnis\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Four White Skirts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Finland\u2019s internationally best known festival curator, <strong>Mika Taanila<\/strong> will return to Sodankyl\u00e4 once again presenting not only the newest short film treasures of experimental films from all around the world, but also in a special show, the legendary short film sensation <em>Christmas on Earth<\/em>, by the shooting star of the 60s underground, <strong>Barbara Rubin<\/strong>, complemented with <strong>Chuck Smith\u2019s<\/strong> documentary <em>Barbara Rubin and the Exploiding NY Underground<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music films and auteur portraits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, music films and documentaries about filmmakers with production samples are a part of the programme at MSFF. The great actor <strong>Ethan Hawke<\/strong> has once again been behind the camera and directed a successful biography <em>Blaze <\/em>about Texas singer legend Blaze Foley. <strong>Airbek Daiyerbekov\u2019s <\/strong><em>The Song of The Tree<\/em> is a unique Kyrgyz musical. This time jazz is represented in two elegant documentaries: <strong>Leslie Woodhead\u2019s<\/strong> singer portrait<em> Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things <\/em>and <strong>Eric Friendler\u2019s<\/strong> <em>It Must Schwing: The Blue Note Story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The honored late filmmakers of MSFF guests <strong>Agn\u00e8s Varda<\/strong> and <strong>Milos Forman,<\/strong> as well as cinematographer <strong>Robby M\u00fcller\u2019s<\/strong> and director <strong>William Friedkin\u2019s<\/strong> production is displayed on the films <em>Cl\u00e9o from 5 to 7<\/em>, <em>Black Peter<\/em>, <em>The American Friend<\/em> and <em>Cruising. <\/em>In addition, the program includes portraits of <strong>Buster Keaton<\/strong> and <strong>Robert Mitchum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Carte blanche and comedies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pirjo Honkasalo<\/strong> presents her favourite films in Carte blanhce, and has chosen a set of films with young main characters. The series is a stunning mini-collection of classics: Indian <strong>Satyajit Ray\u2019s <\/strong><em>Song of the Road<\/em>, Italian <strong>Pier Paolo Pasolini\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Mamma Roma<\/em>, French <strong>Robert Bresson\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Mouchette<\/em>, Iran <strong>Forouk Farrokzhad\u2019s<\/strong> short film <em>The House Is Black<\/em> and Polish <strong>Anna Zamecka\u2019s<\/strong> documentary <em>Communion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The big circus tent is filled with laughter at midnight sun as the early comedies of European director masters are shown in their very own class: Dutch <strong>Paul Verhoeven\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Business is Business, <\/em>Spanish <strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s <\/strong><em>Law of Desire, <\/em>Italian <strong>Roberto Benigni\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Johnny Stecchino <\/em>and Serbian <strong>Emir Kusturica\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Black Cat, White Cat.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The 34th Midnight Sun Film Festival\u2019s (12.\u201316.6.2019)\u00a0scheduled festival programme is now out.
