{"id":12156,"date":"2019-06-14T17:07:06","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T14:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/?p=12156"},"modified":"2019-06-15T22:29:09","modified_gmt":"2019-06-15T19:29:09","slug":"12-6-colour-splashes-and-masters-of-form","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/en\/12-6-colour-splashes-and-masters-of-form\/","title":{"rendered":"12th of June: Colour Splashes and Masters of Form"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 34th Midnight Sun Film Festival got off to a lively start with the eager festival audience queuing for tickets while the sun was promisingly peeking out from behind the clouds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head start for the festival was taken in the Small Tent where school children got to enjoy the screening of the French animation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Illusionist.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festival visitors found their way to the new Cinema Kitinen. The inaugural screening of the new theatre was <\/span><b>Darja <\/b><b>\u017duk\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> festival favourite<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crystal Swan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which takes influence from the aesthetics of the subcultures of Minsk in the 1990s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no shortage of recent international festival hits on the opening day. The School presented films such as <\/span><b>Nadav Lapid\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synonyms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which won Berlinale\u2019s Golden Bear Award, and the Karlovy Vary awarded surreal road movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter Flies. <\/span><\/i><b>Olmo Omerzu\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> film brilliantly reflects the situation of the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening day offered a set of domestic cinema with a fresh perspective both new and experimental with movies such as <\/span><b>Arttu Hagluns\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> self-produced film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Klaus H\u00e4r\u00f6\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Last Deal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Anna<\/b> <b>Eriksson\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and short films from Finnish filmmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Carte Blanche setting of films orchestrated by documentarist <\/span><b>Pirjo Honkasalo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got off to a good start with <\/span><b>Robert Bresson\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouchette <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 1967. Lapinsuu movie theatre got its share of many impressive screenings. The atmosphere in the opening day screening was through the roof when it was time for the screening <\/span><b>Fernando Meirelles\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Constant Gardener, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a modern classic that criticizes globalisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The audience was just as fascinated by the screening of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabbeh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a colourful portrayal of a nomad village by the acclaimed Iranian director <\/span><b>Mohsen Makhmalbaf.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie night culminated with <\/span><b>Arnaud Desplechin\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nostalgic and pictoresque film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Golden Days.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Photo: Juho Liukkonen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The 34th Midnight Sun Film Festival got off to a lively start with the eager festival audience queuing for tickets while the sun was promisingly peeking out from behind the clouds.
