In the afternoon, the Small Tent offered a discussion with professor <\/span><b>Elina Knihtil\u00e4,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the chairman of the Trade Union Pro, <\/span><b>Jorma Malinen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filmmakers <\/span><b>Anssi M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Reetta Huhtanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing about the fairness at work with the host, journalist <\/span><b>Iida Siimes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The discussion touched themes such as the #MeToo movement, position of the worker, exercising of power in the cultural field and the capacity of empathy and impact in fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the heat of the afternoon at Cinema Kitinen, <\/span><b>Pirjo Honkasalo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented two of her favourite documentaries, <\/span><b>Anna Zamecka\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Forough Farrokhzad\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The House is Black<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She wanted to also pick movies from female directors to her Carte Blanche set of films. Honkasalo says that women are often excellent filmmakers as they have the gift of seeing small details and transforming them into something much bigger. In his Friday\u2019s early evenings masterclass <\/span><b>Kent Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduced <\/span><b>Djibril Diop Mamb\u00e9ty\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touki Bouki, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the self-taught director\u2019s landmark film. The Senegalese virtuoso wanted to reform and shake the familiar imagery of African cinema. According to Jones, Mamb\u00e9ty succeeded in creating a new, genuinely African cinema with its own unique style of narration. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touki Bouki <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was part of a restoration project of the World Cinema Foundation that Jones is a part of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the evening, the Big Tent was filled up with audience when it was time for the screening of <\/span><b>Anthony Asquith\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silent movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Cottage on Dartmoor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accompanied by multi-instrumentalist <\/span><b>Stephen Horne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two works of art met, with Horne creating a magnificent world of sound to the dramatic and humorous black-and-white classic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mika Taanila\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> masterclass explored the world of the underground film of New York in the 60s. The documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells a story of the pioneer of the industry. \u201cThe underground industry was always regarded as dominated by men, but luckily history is being reread over and over again and we start to get a better understanding of the people who created the new American cinema\u201d, Taanila explained in his introduction.
