{"id":19636,"date":"2022-06-18T15:50:43","date_gmt":"2022-06-18T12:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/?p=19636"},"modified":"2022-06-18T16:38:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-18T13:38:01","slug":"17-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/en\/17-6\/","title":{"rendered":"June 17: Music, roadmovies, and the golden midnight sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On festival Friday the audience got to enjoy two Morning Discussions when Hungarian <\/span><b>Ildik\u00f3 Enyedi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Brazilian <\/span><b>Karim A\u00efnouz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared stories about their lives and careers at the Kitisenranta School. Although coming from different cultural backgrounds, both of the filmmakers grew up in politically oppressive environments and found creative homes in the alternative art circles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Small Tent is dedicated this year for other events and side programs, and on Saturday it hosted childrens\u2019 films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emil of L\u00f6nneberga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The scientific special program featured a <\/span><b>Timo Vesala <\/b>led<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> panel discussion that approached the topic of wetlands from both scientific and cultural viewpoints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festival founder <\/span><b>Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed some new and old works. The sold out Lapinsuu cinema travelled to sunny California with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L.A. Without a Map<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1998) and later in the evening at the School the destination was something completely different: Corona bar in Helsinki in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gracious Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2020). The latter screening was spiced with a Q&amp;A with actors <\/span><b>Kari Heiskanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Timo Torikka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Kaurism\u00e4ki himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road was calling in many films of the day. One could choose from a selection of road movies such as French rarity <i>And the Little Prince Said <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1992), festival guest <\/span><b>Jonas Selberg Augusts\u00e9n<\/b>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depiction of roma youth <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Garbage Helicopter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015) and <\/span><b>Mathieu Amalric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold Me Tight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tour<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2010), two excellent samples of the director\u2019s versatility. After Friday turned to Saturday <\/span><b>Mikko Niskanen<\/b>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rare youth depiction <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gotta Run!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982) was shown at the traditional screening slot reserved for a Finnish classic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier that day Lapinsuu Cinema was fully packed as <\/span><b>Kaija Saariaho<\/b>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carte blanche selection <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1968) treated the audience with some music from <\/span><b>J.S. Bach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The long waited silent film screening of <\/span><b>Buster Keaton<\/b>\u2019s <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steamboat Bill, Jr.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1928) was accompanied with M\/S Tempo orchestra, led by <\/span><b>Mauri Sum\u00e9n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After the rapturous event the midnight sun gilded the night at Porttikoski dance venue and in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer of Soul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021), a musical documentary shown in the Big Tent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialities of the night included <\/span><b>Mika Taanila<\/b>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> masterclass of experimental cinema &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stylography of Camera&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the School.
