Meyer also revealed a surprising connection to Finland from his personal history: his mother was born here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of our Finnish filmmaker guests, director <\/span><b>Hanna Bergholm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hatching<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was present at the Big Tent\u2019s morning screening of her early short film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mun Lappi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Lapland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a Midnight Sun Film Centre production from 2005. International guests Nicholas Meyer, <\/span><b>Jonas Selberg Augusts\u00e9n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Mathieu Amalric <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were also presenting the last screenings of their films before bidding farewell. Amalric, whose enthusiasm and eager participation charmed the festival crowd, became an unofficial mascot of sorts for Midnight Sun Film Festival 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional Film Panel was also a celebration this year as it was the 10th time the panel was held in Sodankyl\u00e4. The panel host was <\/span><b>Ville Virtanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and this year\u2019s panel members were director <\/span><b>Johanna Vuoksenmaa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, journalist <\/span><b>Tuomas Rantanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, actor, singer <\/span><b>Olavi Uusivirta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and journalist, producer <\/span><b>Iida Simes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They watched five short films, out of which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1981) came as the clear winner with a full score. One of the panel members summarized the film as \u201cexactly how a short film should be\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composer <\/span><b>Kaija Saariaho<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s carte blanche selection\u2019s last screening was held at the Big Tent. <\/span><b>Jean-Luc Godard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s French new wave classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathless<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1960), which was also featured on the festival\u2019s official 2022 image, was one of the young Saariaho\u2019s first glimpses of Paris, a city that later became her home. Saariaho also told the audience that the visit to Sodankyl\u00e4, a first one for her, was such a great experience that she wishes to become a \u201cpermanent member\u201d of the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Class guests Olaf M\u00f6ller and <\/span><b>Jennifer Barker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popped by at Cinema Kitinen to introduce the animation novelty<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inu-oh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021). The duo\u2019s well-informed and enthusiastic preface offered a crash course in Japanese history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the very last slots of the program screened three reruns the festival audience had had a chance to vote for. The closing film at Cinema Lapinsuu was the Finnish hit <em>Girl Picture<\/em>, which had attracted a lot of attention already prior to the festival. At School the audience got to see <strong>Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/strong>\u2019s gem from the &#8217;90s, <em>L.A. Without a Map, <\/em>and at Cinema Kitinen the program closed with a treat from the new international\u00a0 film selection, <strong>Audrey Diwan<\/strong>\u2019s impressive<em> Happening<\/em>.
