Breaking its ticket sales record, the festival gathered 35 000 visitors under the shining midnight sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Midnight Sun Film Festival was held for the 38th time on June 14-18. Throughout the sunny and warm festival week, the screenings and events were attended by 35 000 visitors altogether, which is an all time high for the festival. 64 screenings sold out. &#8220;When the only problem is as positive as a record number of sold out screenings (increasingly even screenings of classic films \u2013 such as Czech animation from the 1950s!), we can only be extremely proud and happily grateful,&#8221; says the festival&#8217;s Artistic Director <strong>Timo Malmi<\/strong>. &#8220;Particularly compared to the previous year, affected by post-COVID and cold weather, this year summery Lapland showed its best, sunniest sides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the top documentarists in the world, Ukrainian <strong>Sergei Loznitsa<\/strong> presented both his documentary and fictional works in popular screenings. The festival audience got to enjoy films from throughout American editor, producer, screenwriter, and director\u00a0<strong>Mary Sweeney&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>career, including her collaborations with\u00a0<strong>David Lynch<\/strong> and her own directorial works. French <strong>Emmanuel Mouret&#8217;s<\/strong> films charmed the audience with their romance and wit. On the final festival day, Austrian <strong>David Wagner<\/strong> (<em>Eismayer<\/em>), Estonian <strong>Anna Hints<\/strong> (<em>Smoke Sauna Sisterhood<\/em>), and Icelandic <strong>Sigur\u00fe\u00f3r Hallbj\u00f6rnsson\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Megas<\/em>) presented their films to the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The festival&#8217;s traditional silent film concerts sold out the Big Tent on Friday and Saturday nights. <strong>Matti Bye<\/strong>, <strong>Lau Nau<\/strong>\u00a0ja <strong>Leo Svensson&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>music gently accompanied\u00a0<strong>Victor Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>110-year-old\u00a0<em>Ingeborg Holm<\/em>. Lau Nau, <strong>Topias Tihe\u00e4salo<\/strong> and <strong>Hermanni Yli-Tepsa&#8217;s<\/strong> band Seitsem\u00e4s taivas lead the audience into the romantic atmosphere of\u00a0<strong>Frank Borzage&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong><em>7th Heaven<\/em>. The band Maustetyt\u00f6t performed their music in a unique film concert, creating a new soundtrack for <strong>Aki Kaurism\u00e4ki&#8217;s<\/strong> classic <em>The Match Factory Girl<\/em>. In the festival&#8217;s beloved karaoke screenings, <strong>Olavi Uusivirta<\/strong> and <strong>Ismo Alanko<\/strong> lead the full audiences in singing Finnish tunes.<\/p>\n<p>Aki Kaurism\u00e4ki&#8217;s Cannes-winning\u00a0<em>Fallen Leaves\u00a0<\/em>had its Finnish premiere in Sodankyl\u00e4 in three sold out screenings. The audience went wild for the film in the first screening in the Big Tent on Saturday, in which Kaurism\u00e4ki, the film&#8217;s stars <strong>Alma P\u00f6ysti<\/strong> and <strong>Jussi Vatanen<\/strong>, as well as Alma the dog were present. Finnish premieres were also celebrated by<strong> Juha Suonp\u00e4\u00e4&#8217;s<\/strong> documentary <em>Lynx Man<\/em> and <strong>Hanna V\u00e4stinsalo&#8217;s<\/strong> scifi drama <em>Palimpsest<\/em>, which also screened at the festival for full audiences in the presence of filmmaker guests.<\/p>\n<p>The festival ended on Sunday night with three audience favourite reruns, which featured Fallen Leaves, <strong>Georgia Oakley&#8217;s<\/strong> strong debut\u00a0<em>Blue Jean<\/em>, and\u00a0<strong>Veljko Vidak&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong><em>Cin\u00e9ma Laika<\/em>, screened in the presence of the director.<\/p>\n<p>During the festival, a petition was put together by current and former members of Finnish film clubs encouraging people to found film clubs around the country.
