The four nightless nights of the festival attracted approximately 28 000 visitors to wonder at the delights of the silver screen. The number of visitors is close to last year\u2019s, which was the second most popular year of the festival. There were as many as 24 sold out screenings at the festival. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s main guests are both true icons of European cinema: Carol Saura has been considered among the most important Spanish directors for over half a century, while Hanna Schygulla is among the central actors of New German Cinema \u00a0and was the go-to actress of Fassbinder. The festival\u2019s international atmosphere was heightened by the presence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bertrand Bonello, one of new French cinema\u2019s most significant directors, Danish director Per Fly who is known for his \u201cclass trilogy\u201d, and Kai Wessel, who came to the festival with his acclaimed film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nebel im August<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s Finnish guests included singer Sinikka Sokka, who charmed in Peter von Bagh\u2019s farewell film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Songs from Utopia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and actress Eija Pokkinen whose fateful presence could be seen in the films <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Green Widow <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onnenpeli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Director Selma Vilhunen and actress Paula Vesala were also at the festival to present their popular film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Wing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juho Kuosmanen and Oona Airola drove the audience wild at Thursday\u2019s sold out silent film screening of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonshiners \/ Romu-Mattila and a Beautiful Lady<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was accompanied by Kino Orchestra Ykspihlaja and effects guru Heikki Kossi. In addition to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Songs from Utopia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Finnish premieres at the festival included Thomas Laine\u2019s acclaimed debut feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally The Midnight Sun Film Festival also celebrated Finland\u2019s 100th anniversary. The celebration started on Wednesday with a matinee on Finnish cinema and history, while on Thursday the Sodankyl\u00e4 Municipal House hosted a celebration of 100 years of science-making in Sodankyl\u00e4 to a full crowd. Professor Esko Valtaoja spoke at the Municipal House and also began a new Carte Blanche tradition at the festival with screenings of his favourite films <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Chinoise <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mirror<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finland\u2019s centennial was also celebrated in the \u201cFinland 100\u201d series of screenings and scholar Lauri Piispa\u2019s Master Class on the lost treasures of Finnish cinema. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As usual, the special screenings at the Big Tent attracted the most amount of audience. On Saturday night, the Big Tent was busting at the seams with an ecstatic audience as Chamber Orchestra Avanti!, conductor Gabriel Thibaudeau and soprano Reetta Haavisto accompanied the screening of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Phantom of the Opera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Director Neil Hardwick introduced the karaoke screening of his film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If You Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on late Saturday night. Olavi Uusivirta did a magnificent job as the pre-singer of the screening, which united different generations via evergreen classics. The screening of the Cannes winner <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli M\u00e4ki <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the Big Tent was also sold out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most popular Master Class at this year\u2019s festival was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fukushima I<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a series of nuclear short films curated by Olaf M\u00f6ller and Mika Taanila. The annual Sodankyl\u00e4 Prize was awarded to doctor of film art Eeva Kurki.
