Temple chatted about his career with the British music scene, meetings with the Sex Pistols and The Clash, and the production of music videos. The director also shared his memory of how his relationship to films has shifted during the past years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the morning discussion the day continued in Cinema Lapinsuu with <\/span><b>Robert Bresson\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Gentle Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1969). <\/span><b>Dominique Sanda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a special guest of this year\u2019s festival, was also present in the screening and answered the audience\u2019s and interviewer\u2019s questions, such as a question of Bresson\u2019s methods during the production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another special guest, <\/span><b>Chris Petit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was also interviewed after the screening of his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinal and the Corpse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1992) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asylum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2000).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Thursday, a series of highlights, the master classes took off with the Russian film critic <\/span><b>Andrei Plahov\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choice <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Battleship Potemkin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1925), celebrating its 100th anniversary year. In turn, the familiar face of the festival, <\/span><b>Olaf M\u00f6ller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, started his series of the master classes with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dead End Drive-In<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1986).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reveal of the Finnish surprise preview film was another peak within Thursday\u2019s schedule. In the crammed Lapinsuu, <\/span><b>Lauri-Matti Parppei\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature length debut, selected for the Cannes festival as well,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A Light That Never Goes Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2025) electrified the atmosphere and roused the audience to elated applause. Rauma, Parppei\u2019s childhood hometown, is also the milieu of the film. The dialogue is in Rauma dialect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the screening Parppei told how it was very different to see the film in Sodankyl\u00e4, than it was to watch at Cannes. \u201cThe film was edited in Norway, and mostly its audience so far has consisted of people who do not understand a word of Finnish, not to mention the dialect of Rauma. It was very enjoyable &#8211; and very different, too \u2013 to experience the film here\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The long line crossed and curled on the school yard, when the festival guests waited for the entrance to the first karaoke screening of the 40th anniversary year\u2019s festival. The film encouraging the joint chanting was <\/span><b>James Mangold\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Complete Unknown <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2024), narrating the dashing rise of the music legend Bob Dylan in the 60\u2019s. The singalongs were led by Olavi Uusivirta with Dylan\u2019s parts, and Aino Torttila with Joan Baez\u2019s lyrics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later on during the evening the Big Tent filled up quickly with its audience, when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosso<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1985) by <\/span><b>Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was to be screened. The audience was delighted when Kaurism\u00e4ki and the lead actor <\/span><b>Kari V\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4nen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told how the film was shot on surplus film left from prior projects, so the method of filming was rather improvisatory &#8211; yet every scene had to succeed with the first shot! Collective singing accompanied the scene, where V\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4nen and the other lead, <\/span><b>Martti Syrj\u00e4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, belt out their interpretation of the evergreen \u2018Olen suomalainen &#8211; L\u2019italiano\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the red tent the pioneer of the Greek Weird Wave and film director, <\/span><b>Athina Rachel Tsangari<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduced her film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2004). The film, based on the novel carrying the same name, follows the villagers who are fighting for their existence, but gets carried away with xenophobia and violence, ultimately sealing their very own annihilation. Tsangari explained how she affectionate towards the weak and cowardly antiheroes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film shot on the Scottish moors is lit mostly with the natural daylight. Tsangari wanted the film\u2019s scenes to be physical and dance-like, and therefore a major part of the original dialogue of the screenwriting was eventually left unused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>L\u00e9onor Serraille<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another special guest of the Festival, arrived straight from the airport to the screening of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montparnasse Bienven\u00fce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2017), accompanied by booming applauds. Serraille was just in time to answer the questions of the Q&amp;A discussion that followed the screening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the evening at the Club Tent the genre-bending and breaking Pietarin Spektaakkeli lifted the mood even higher, and the tent, despite its size, was yet again proved to be worthy of its name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the festival day of Thursday films were screened and loved in cold air, though the sun glared bright. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The festival\u2019s second day began with the traditional morning discussion with Julien Temple, the legendary director who began his career during the late 1970s.
