On the third day of the festival, the morning discussion featured the long-time French film star <\/span>Dominique Sanda,<\/b> who spoke about her work with renowned directors such as <\/span>Robert Bresson, Jacques Demy, <\/b>and <\/span>Bernardo Bertolucci.<\/b> A particularly young cinephile, who had asked Sanda a question at the opening screening, also presented a beautiful portrait they had drawn of the film star after the discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanda, who had also taken time to try out fish traps on the waters of Sodankyl\u00e4, appeared later in the evening at the Red Tent for Demy\u2019s <\/span>A Room in Town<\/span><\/i> (1982). During the opening discussion, she reminisced about working with Demy but noted how she was still disappointed that her real singing voice wasn\u2019t used in the film. The French actress embraced even the most risque or challenging parts of the role\u2014she appeared in many scenes wearing nothing but a fur coat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the midday sun, the traditional football match <\/span>Midnight Sun El Cl\u00e1sico<\/span><\/i> ended, as tradition dictates, in a draw. The sun was shining and the mud was flying as festival guests, volunteers, and staff enthusiastically chased the ball in a lively match.<\/span><\/p>\n

The filmmaker screening at midday featured <\/span>Chris Petit\u2019s<\/b> Content<\/span><\/i> (2010) along with the rarely seen short film <\/span>The Carfax Fragment<\/span><\/i> (2001). In the afternoon at the Red Tent, the audience watched <\/span>Ari<\/span><\/i> (2025) by the French director <\/span>Leonor Serraille<\/b>, who had arrived in Sodankyl\u00e4 on Thursday. The film is a more melancholic and understated sibling to her earlier work <\/span>Montparnasse Bienven\u00fce<\/span><\/i> (2017), exploring themes of incompletion and experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Club Tent, a panel discussion titled<\/span> “Cultural Cuts and the Struggle for Finnish Civilization”<\/span><\/i>, organized by the trade union Pro, brought together figures like <\/span>Jouko Aaltonen <\/b>and <\/span>Elina Knihtil\u00e4<\/b> to discuss challenges and possible solutions. \u201cIf we don\u2019t take care of our culture, no one else will\u201d, said Pro\u2019s chairperson <\/span>Niko Simola<\/b> during the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early evening at Lapinsuu, the premiere of <\/span>Kronos Kairos<\/span><\/i>, directed by <\/span>Herra Ylpp\u00f6<\/b>, took place. Alongside the director, sound designer <\/span>Kirka Sainio<\/b> and screenwriter <\/span>Mika L\u00e4tti <\/b>were present to talk about the film\u2019s background and production process. They revealed that the Sodankyl\u00e4 Film Festival\u2014and the magic of Sodankyl\u00e4 itself\u2014played a significant role in the film\u2019s origin story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later in the evening at the School venue, audiences enjoyed a Masterclass screening curated by<\/span> Jennifer Barker<\/b>, titled <\/span>A Distant Gaze: From the Tiny and Insignificant to the Vast and Monumental<\/span><\/i>. The short animations in the screening moved through galactic scales, contemplating questions both greater and smaller than life itself. The audience was invited to notice things that often go unnoticed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The silent film concert in the Big Tent drew a full house, as usual, for <\/span>F.W. Murnau<\/b>\u2019s <\/span>The Last Laugh<\/span><\/i>, accompanied by Anssi Tikanm\u00e4ki Film Orchestra. Another popular event was the late-night screening of the rural romance gem <\/span>At the Rovaniemi Fair<\/span><\/i>. The 2005 karaoke screening of <\/span>Jorma Nortimo\u2019s<\/b> film was the first of its kind in Sodankyl\u00e4, making this 20th-anniversary presentation a true celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Camp-spirited night owls were still going strong at 5 a.m., partying to the beat of guest of honour <\/span>Julien Temple\u2019s<\/b> sci-fi comedy <\/span>Earth Girls Are Easy<\/span><\/i>.
