{"id":30080,"date":"2025-06-15T15:36:07","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T12:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/?p=30080"},"modified":"2025-06-15T15:36:07","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T12:36:07","slug":"15-6-2026-morning-discussion-with-anssi-manttari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/en\/15-6-2026-morning-discussion-with-anssi-manttari\/","title":{"rendered":"15.6.2026 Morning discussion with Anssi M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"74\" data-end=\"494\"><strong data-start=\"74\" data-end=\"189\">Anssi M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri has witnessed the evolution of Finnish film culture from the post-war period to the present day.<\/strong> He recalls that the first film he ever saw was <em data-start=\"237\" data-end=\"265\">Maaret \u2013 Girl of the Fells<\/em> (1947), directed by Valentin Vaala. During his childhood and youth, M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri spent much of his free time with films, as he and his brother worked at a workers\u2019 hall cinema. As payment, they got to watch film screenings for free.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"821\">M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri acted in various amateur theaters, and his first film role was in<strong> Mikko Niskanen\u2019s<\/strong> <em data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"596\">Sissit<\/em> (1962), which became a turning point in his career. After that film, he got work as a production assistant at a film company. He recalls learning crucial lessons while observing film editor <strong>Juho Gartz<\/strong> at work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"821\">\u201cI spent all the free time I could behind Gartz\u2019s back, watching him edit. That was my film school. I learned so much from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1384\">M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri worked on short films by other filmmakers, but eventually the idea of making his own short film began to take shape. He received a 7,000-mark grant, which he used to make the short film <em data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1163\">Yst\u00e4vykset<\/em> (<em data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1174\">Friends<\/em>, 1969). His first feature film <em data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1218\">Pyh\u00e4 Perhe<\/em> (<em data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1237\">The Holy Family<\/em>) he directed in 1976. Today, he admits he\u2019s fairly disappointed in that film. Directing <strong>Lasse P\u00f6ysti<\/strong> in the leading role proved to be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1384\">\u201cHe had already played the role in theater and knew exactly how he wanted to act it. I lost control of the character direction. The end result was that Lasse won a Jussi Award\u2014and that was kind of the best part of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1912\">M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri founded his own production company and was active in the trade union movement. As a result, he was even seen as a &#8220;class traitor.&#8221; He describes the 1980s as politically active, though the films themselves were not particularly political. Securing funding for films, however, was difficult.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"2301\">M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri\u2019s production company remained productive from the 1970s onward, which he attributes to good relationships with banks. He recalls convincing bank managers why his &#8220;film dabbling&#8221; was worth financing. Sometimes, a bottle of liquor was placed on the table to help make his case. Good relations ensured he got loans, and everything was based on trust. Times have changed since then.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2820\">When asked about making more commercial films, M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri states that, due to financial circumstances, it&#8217;s sometimes necessary. He says he portrays the times he lives in, telling stories about current events and the economy. He adds small, personally meaningful, non-commercial elements to his films as well.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"3278\">In closing, M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri reminisces about the early days of the <strong data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2912\">Midnight Sun Film Festival<\/strong> in Sodankyl\u00e4. At the very first festival in 1986, the opening screening was scheduled for 2 PM\u2014but at noon, they still lacked the local sheriff&#8217;s permit to hold the festival, as not all films had been censored yet. M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri says he invited the sheriff to the hotel bar, along with director Samuel Fuller. Fuller talked a lot, and eventually the sheriff simply said:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"3278\">\u201cGo ahead and have your festival!\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3420\">If stranded on a desert island, M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri says he would take Joseph Losey\u2019s film <em data-start=\"3398\" data-end=\"3403\">Eva<\/em> (1962) with him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Anssi M\u00e4ntt\u00e4ri has witnessed the evolution of Finnish film culture from the post-war period to the present day.
