{"id":314,"date":"2016-05-06T15:32:50","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T12:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/?p=314"},"modified":"2017-05-03T15:36:26","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T12:36:26","slug":"oscar-berlinale-winners-among-guest-line-midnight-sun-film-festival-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/en\/oscar-berlinale-winners-among-guest-line-midnight-sun-film-festival-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar and Berlinale Winners Among The Guest Line-Up of Midnight Sun Film Festival 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Czech <strong>Ji\u0159\u00ed Menzel<\/strong>, Scotsman <strong>Bill Forsyth<\/strong>, Spanish <strong>Fernando Trueba<\/strong>, French <strong>Mia Hansen-L\u00f8ve<\/strong>, Icelander <strong>Dagur Kari<\/strong> and Italian <strong>Gianfranco Rosi<\/strong> are part of the 31<sup>st<\/sup> Midnight Sun Film Festival international guest line-up that includes Academy Award and Berlinale winners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INTERNATIONAL GUESTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>JI<\/strong><strong>\u0158<\/strong><strong>\u00cd MENZEL<\/strong> (b. 1938) became the best known director of the Czechoslovak New Wave alongside Milos Forman with his feature-film debut <em>Closely Watched Trains<\/em> (1966), winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 40<sup>th<\/sup> Academy Awards in 1968. Menzel continued to adapt works by Czech novelist Bohumil Hrabal with <em>Larks on a String<\/em> (1969), which was banned by Czechoslovakia\u2019s communist government but won the Golden Bear two decades later at the 1990 Berlin International Film Festival; an exuberant brewery town love triangle depiction <em>Cutting It Short<\/em> (1980); and <em>I Served the King of England<\/em> (2006), a picaresque story about an ambitious but simple waiter in a deluxe Prague hotel. Among Menzel films also screened in MSFF 2016 is <em>Capricious Summer <\/em>(1968), Menzel\u2019s periodic comedy film of an unfortunate summer in a small Czech village.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BILL FORSYTH<\/strong> (b. 1946) is truly a pioneer of Scottish film, and often compared to another Glaswegian, Alexander Mackendrick, the master of English Ealing Comedies. Forsyth\u2019s international breakthrough was the gender role challenging teenage tale <em>Gregory\u2019s Girl<\/em> (1980), also ranked #30 in British Film Institute\u2019s list of the Top 100 British films. <em>Local Hero<\/em> (1982), starring Burt Lancaster, is a gentle, quirky comedy dealing with environmental issues. Forsyth struggled three years to finish his first American film, but in the end, <em>Housekeeping<\/em> (1987) became a masterful comedy about conformity, madness and family tragedies. Forsyth\u2019s next Hollywood pieces, John Sayles-written small-time criminal comedy <em>Breaking In<\/em> (1989) and reincarnation tale <em>Being Human<\/em> (1994) are interesting as well, not least because of lead roles by Burt Reynolds and Robin Williams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FERNANDO TRUEBA<\/strong> (b. 1955) became world famous for his sensual, Academy Award -winning comedy drama <em>Belle Epoque<\/em>, not to forget his delightful acceptance speech (\u201cI would like to believe in God in order to thank him, but I just believe in Billy Wilder, so\u2026 thank you, Mr. Wilder\u201d). However, Trueba began his career already in the mid-1970s as one of the most central figures in contemporary Spanish cinema \u2013 as a critic, the founder of Casablanca film magazine and a director. Prime examples of Trueba\u2019s versatility are six Grammy awards as music producer as well as many fine music documentary films such as <em>Calle 54 <\/em>(2000), dedicated to Latin jazz, and <em>Chico &amp; Rita<\/em> (2010), a 40s-set animation romance film sweetened by Cuban jazz. Among other Trueba films screened in Sodankyl\u00e4 are <em>The Artist and the Model<\/em> (2012), starring the charming duo of Jean Rochefort and Claudia Cardinale, and <em>The Girl of Your Dreams<\/em> (1998), a witty portrayal of the era of fascism starring Pen\u00e9lope Cruz. Trueba will be accompanied in Sodankyl\u00e4 by his wife\/producer <strong>CRISTINA HUETE<\/strong> and his son, director <strong>JON\u00c1S TRUEBA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JON\u00c1S TRUEBA<\/strong> (b. 1981), son of Fernando Trueba, has a distinct directorial touch of his own and has already been awarded at festivals of M\u00e1laga, Nantes and Toulouse. His road movie <em>The Romantic Exiles<\/em> (2015) has been described as \u201cdelightfully ironic Rohmer-infused feature\u201d. <em>The Wishful Thinkers<\/em> (2013), a black and white homage in the style of the French New Wave, is also screened in Sodankyl\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>French film director and screenwriter <strong>MIA HANSEN-<\/strong><strong>L<\/strong><strong>\u00d8<\/strong><strong>V<\/strong><strong>E<\/strong> (b. 1981) was recently awarded with the Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear for Best Director for <em>Things to Come<\/em>, premiered in MSFF 2016. Brilliant Isabelle Huppert stars as a philosophy teacher experiencing major setbacks in her family life and work. Hansen-L\u00f8ve has also worked as an actress (starting her career at 18 under the direction of her future spouse Olivier Assayas) and as a critic for famed <em>Cahiers du Cinema<\/em> magazine. Hansen-L\u00f8ve\u2019s direction works are usually based on hers or her fellowmen\u2019s personal experiences. Some fine examples are <em>The Father of my Children<\/em> (2009) about a film director struggling with suicidal despair, <em>Goodbye First Love<\/em> (2011), an examination of the meaning of first love, and <em>Eden<\/em> (2014), a story of a DJ in 90\u2019s house music scene.<\/p>\n<p>Within last ten years, <strong>CHARLES GILLIBERT<\/strong> (b. 1977) has risen to the ranks of most prominent French film producers. He has produced France\u2019s recent Oscar nominee <em>Mustang<\/em> as well as works by some of the top directors in the world such as Abbas Kiarostami, Xavier Dolan and Abdellatic Kechiche \u2013 not to forget Hansen-L\u00f8ve and Assayas. Another Gillibert productions, Assayas\u2019s <em>Personal Shopper<\/em>, is also included in this year\u2019s Cannes competition.<\/p>\n<p>Icelander <strong>DAGUR K\u00c1RI<\/strong> (b. 1973) won the Nordic Council Film Prize last year with his thrilling loser portrayal <em>Virgin Mountain<\/em> (2015). K\u00e1ri, educated as both film director and a musician, works as the head of director\u2019s programme at the National Film School of Denmark. His breakthrough film <em>N\u00f3i Albin\u00f3i<\/em> (2003) as well as a \u201cJarmuschian\u201d, Copenhagen-filmed drama comedy about marginalized young adults, <em>Dark Horse<\/em> (2008), will be screened from this master of melancholical, Kaurism\u00e4ki-esque humour and minimalized expression.<\/p>\n<p>Italian <strong>GIANFRANCO ROSI<\/strong> (b. 1964) won the Golden Bear of Berlin Film Festival this February with his documentary film <em>Fire at Sea<\/em> (2016), which wields the most burning topic of our times: European refugee question. \u201cIt is urgent, imaginative and necessary filmmaking\u201d, praised Meryl Streep, chair of the Berlin jury. Another Rosi film screened in MSFF 2016 is the first documentary film ever awarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival: <em>Sacro GRA<\/em> (2013) a depiction of life along the Grande Raccordo Anulare, the ring-road highway that circles Rome.<\/p>\n<p>Englishman <strong>DAVID FARR<\/strong> (b. 1969) comes to Sodankyl\u00e4 as the writer-producer of a stylish psychological thriller <em>The Ones Below<\/em> (2015), starring Finnish Laura Birn. Previously, Farr has worked as scriptwriter of action thriller <em>Hanna<\/em> (2011), which was partially shot in Finland. Farr has also adapted applauded John le Carr\u00e9 series <em>The Night Manager<\/em> for television.<\/p>\n<p>Actress <strong>MALIN BUSKA<\/strong> (b. 1984) from Swedish Lapland arrives to Sodankyl\u00e4 as the leading actress of Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki\u2019s <em>The Girl King<\/em> (2015). In 2011, Buska was awarded with \u201cRising Star\u201d-award of Stockholm International Film Festival for her performance in Bj\u00f6rn Runge\u2019s <em>Happy End<\/em>.
