Wellman\u2019s<\/strong> silent film classic <em>Beggars of Life<\/em> (1928) at the 31st Midnight Sun Film Festival (June 15th-19th 2016). <strong>Louise Brooks<\/strong>, the beauty with the bob, takes centre stage in her most beloved American role.<\/p>\n<p>With his piano Neil Brand will also accompany a parade of short films by <strong>Hal Roach<\/strong>. In this screening, festival audience can laugh at the antics of <strong>Charlie Chase<\/strong>, <strong>Laurel and Hardy<\/strong> and the dynamic duo of <strong>Marion Byron<\/strong> and <strong>Anita Garvin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most internationally known Finnish pianists, <strong>Iiro Rantala<\/strong>, has composed a new score of <strong>Aki Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/strong>\u2019s masterly silent film <em>Juha<\/em> (1999). Rantala will perform his version of Kaurism\u00e4ki\u2019s tour de force at Sodankyl\u00e4\u2019s international premiere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Film music matinee on Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Festival begins with film music matinee on Wednesday, 15<sup>th<\/sup> of June from 10AM to 3.30PM.<\/p>\n<p>Neil Brand, one of the leading experts of silent film music, conducts the international part of the matinee by highlighting some well-known samples from film music history and leading the conversation with the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Brand is also known for presenting BBC documentary film <em>Sound of Cinema: The Music That Made the Movies<\/em> (2013), which celebrates the art of cinema soundtrack from early ages to present day.<\/p>\n<p>In the domestic part of the matinee, composer-musician <strong>Anssi Tikanm\u00e4ki<\/strong> and director <strong>Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/strong> take part in a discussion about cinema music, their collaborated works and Tikanm\u00e4ki\u2019s career as composer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cinema music classics, metal music and karaoke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Films featuring music by some of the top film composers in the world, e.g. <strong>Bernard Herrmann<\/strong>, <strong>Nino Rota<\/strong>, <strong>Ennio Morricone<\/strong>, <strong>Angelo Badalamenti<\/strong> and <strong>Ryuichi Sakamoto,<\/strong> can be seen in Sodankyl\u00e4 this summer. Film classics such as <em>Psycho<\/em>, <em>Blue Velvet<\/em> and <em>Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence<\/em>, a <strong>David Bowie<\/strong> homage, are part of the programme.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Wacken 3D<\/em> (2014), 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary film of the biggest heavy metal music festival in the world, mythical Mot\u00f6rhead figure <strong>Lemmy Kilmister<\/strong>, <strong>Alice Cooper<\/strong>, <strong>Henry Rollins<\/strong> and the members of <strong>Deep Purple<\/strong> and <strong>Rammstein<\/strong> discuss the meaning of Wacken in between of live music samples.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <em>Jaco<\/em> (2014), is a documentary film about <strong>Jaco Pastorius<\/strong>, the \u201c<strong>Jimi Hendrix<\/strong> of bass guitar\u201d. Among those reminiscing the late bass guitar wizard are <strong>Sting, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana<\/strong> and <strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And as always, MSFF presents a comprehensive setting of film karaoke treats in the spirit of last year\u2019s ecstatic <em>Purple Rain<\/em> sing-along. The first confirmed karaoke screening is <em>The Saimaa Gesture <\/em>(1981), a 35-year old cult classic by the Kaurism\u00e4ki brothers.
