The Franco-Swiss filmmaker\u00a0<strong>Barbet Schroeder<\/strong>\u00a0attends the festival with his wife, the highly appraised actress\u00a0<strong>Bulle Ogier<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Mahamat-Saleh Haroun<\/strong>\u00a0is the celebrated African director from Chad, and\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Guer\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0the Spanish master of poetic and intellectual cinema.\u00a0<strong>Dominik Graf<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the top auteurs of modern Germany. A large group of Finnish filmmakers, musicians, experts, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/msfilmfestival.fi\/en\/news\/award-winning-talents-accompany-beloved-silent-film-concerts\/\">sound wizards\u00a0<strong>Heikki Kossi,\u00a0Nicolas Becker\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Peter Albrechtsen<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0also come to spend time with us under the midnight\u00a0sun. The five-day festivities offer several silent film concerts, fascinating premieres, and eye (and ear!) opening lectures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbet Schroeder<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1941) was born in Teheran but studied filmmaking in Paris. He started making films together with Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette. His first feature film is the hippie story\u00a0<em>More!<\/em> \u2013 one of the first films openly showing the use of hard drugs. In the 80\u2019s Schroeder moved to Hollywood to bigger budgets and huge stars. His best-known films include the Charles Bukowski story\u00a0<em>Barfly<\/em>\u00a0(1987) starring Mickey Rourke. Single White Female (1992) is an iconic erotic thriller about the fears and traumas of the human psyche.\u00a0<em>Reversal of Fortune <\/em>(1990) gained Schroeder an Oscar nomination, and his leading actor <strong>Jeremy Irons<\/strong>\u00a0ended up winning the Oscar for Best Male Lead.\u00a0<em>Idi Amin Dada <\/em>began Schroeder\u2019s \u201cTrilogy Of Evil\u201d in 1974. The trilogy ended with the chilling documentary<em>\u00a0Le v\u00e9n\u00e9rable W.\u00a0<\/em>(2017).<\/p>\n<p>Schroeder comes to Sodankyl\u00e4 together with his wife, the legendary French actress\u00a0<strong>Bulle Ogier<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1939). Ogier commenced her career by acting in\u00a0<strong>Luis Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>absurd comedy\u00a0<em>The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie<\/em>\u00a0(1971),\u00a0<strong>Alain Tanner\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0comedic triangle drama\u00a0<em>Salamander\u00a0<\/em>(1971), and in\u00a0<em>Color of Lies<\/em>\u00a0(1999) by the new wave pioneer\u00a0<strong>Claude Chabrol<\/strong>. Ogier has also worked with her husband in <em>Maitresse<\/em>\u00a0(1976), a striking film about sadomasochism,\u00a0together with\u00a0<strong>G\u00e9rard Depardieu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The French master<strong> Olivier Assayas <\/strong>(b. 1955) visited the Midnight Sun Film Festival four years ago and now returns between his upcoming projects <em>Non Fiction<\/em> and <em>Wasp Network<\/em>. Last year the festival screened his latest film attending the Cannes Film Festival, Personal Shopper, but this year he returns to Finnish Lapland as an expert. Assayas has written a book about Ingmar Bergman and his masterclass is focusing on Bergman\u2019s film <em>Winter Light<\/em> (1963). Assayas\u2019s own breakthrough film <em>Cold Water<\/em> (1994) is rarely screened due to copyrights of its soundtrack (Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, CCR and many others).<\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s top director\u00a0<strong>Mahamat-Saleh Haroun<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1961) has brought home several awards during the past fifteen years from both the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. The pioneer and top director of African cinema is a sovereign storyteller to whom\u00a0<strong>Aki Kaurism\u00e4ki<\/strong>\u00a0paid homage in his 2011 film\u00a0<em>Le Havre<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Bye Bye Africa<\/em>\u00a0(1999) is the autobiographical documentary with which Haroun returned to refresh the smashed film industry of Chad, his war-torn native country.\u00a0<em>Dry Season<\/em>\u00a0(2006),\u00a0<em>A Screaming Man <\/em>(2010) and\u00a0<em>A Season in France<\/em>\u00a0(2017) are charming but serious stories about people in a destroyed nation. In Haroun\u2019s films, Chadian people get to see their own reality from the point of view of one of their own storytellers. As the only film director in Chad, Haroun has also established a film school there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dominik Graf<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1952) arrives in Sodankyl\u00e4 with his films made for the silver screen, but the selection also includes some of his highly noted television works. One of\u00a0Graf\u2019s best-known films is <em>Beloved Sisters<\/em>\u00a0(2014),\u00a0a\u00a0period drama and a poetic portrait of the writer\u00a0<strong>Friedrich Schiller. <\/strong><em>Die Katze (<\/em>1988) is a crime thriller about a brilliantly planned bank robbery and\u00a0<em>Nachtwache<\/em>\u00a0(1993) a great example of his TV work.\u00a0<em>Der Felsen<\/em>\u00a0(2002) is melodrama located in the beautiful island of Corsica, and\u00a0<em>The Red Shadow<\/em>\u00a0(2017) a political thriller that caused public uproar in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Guer\u00edn<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1960) is one of the most interesting filmmakers of modern Spain. He\u2019s a cinefile whose meditative and intellectual films balance between fiction and documentary. In his work Guer\u00edn analyses other films and film history. He is inspired by such great names as <strong>the\u00a0Lumi\u00e8re brothers, Howard Hawks, <\/strong><strong>Yasujir<\/strong><strong>\u014d\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ozu,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>John Ford<\/strong>, to whose beloved classic\u00a0<em>The Quiet Man<\/em>\u00a0(1952) Guer\u00edn has paid tribute in his poetic documentary\u00a0<em>Innisfree<\/em>\u00a0(1990). Guer\u00edn also brings to Sodankyl\u00e4 his experimental film\u00a0<em>Train of Shadows<\/em>\u00a0(1997), the romantic drama\u00a0<em>In the City of Sylvia<\/em>\u00a0(2007), and his latest film\u00a0<em>The Academy of Muses<\/em>\u00a0(2015).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katharina Wyss<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1979) attracted attention at the Venice Film Festival last autumn with her first feature film\u00a0<em>Sarah Plays a Werewolf<\/em>\u00a0(2017). The film is a portrait of a 17-year-old girl who finds theatre a tool for channelling her bottled-up emotions. Sarah\u2019s ideas are dark and radical, but for the first time in her life she gets them heard.<\/p>\n<p>Other guests arriving under the\u00a0midnight\u00a0sun include the young European filmmakers <strong>Anja Kofmel<\/strong> (b. 1982) and\u00a0<strong>Thomas Stuber<\/strong> (b. 1981). Kofmel has created a beautifully crafted debut feature combining documentary to animated elements, <em>Chris the Swiss<\/em>. Stuber\u2019s film <em>In the Aisles<\/em> competed in the Berlinale and stars <strong>Franz Rogowski<\/strong> (<em>Victoria<\/em>) and <strong>Sandra H\u00fcller<\/strong> (<em>Toni Erdmann<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The much anticipated selection of silent film concerts end on a high note thanks to the get-together of award-winning sound artists:\u00a0Finland\u2019s national treasure, the Foley artist\u00a0<strong>Heikki Kossi,<\/strong>\u00a0the two-time Golden Reel Award winner\u00a0<strong>Nicolas Becker<\/strong>\u00a0and their Danish collegue, Sound Master\u00a0<strong>Peter Albrechtsen<\/strong>\u00a0will create a totally new soundscape for Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s rare gem\u00a0<em>The Ring<\/em>\u00a0(1927) and talk about their work with the greatest filmmakers of our time.<\/p>\n<p>The silent film concerts are an essential part of\u00a0the Midnight\u00a0Sun Film Festival experience. This year they include King Vidor\u2019s breathtaking comedy\u00a0<em>The Patsy<\/em>\u00a0(1928), which will be served together with\u00a0<strong>Maud Nelissen\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>music performed by the band\u00a0<strong>The Sprockets<\/strong>. The young genius of\u00a0<strong>Jean Vigo<\/strong>\u00a0was gone too soon, but his films keep on living. The tenor saxophonist and composer\u00a0<strong>Esa <\/strong><strong>Pietil\u00e4<\/strong> blows new life into Vigo&#8217;s short comedic documentary\u00a0<em>About Nice<\/em>\u00a0(1930).<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Carte Blanche<\/em>\u00a0is presented by the award-winning Finnish novelist\u00a0<strong>Kjell West\u00f6\u00a0<\/strong>(b. 1961). His selection of films include the greatest works of Matti Kassila, Luis Bu\u00f1uel, Ettore Scola, and Joel &amp; Ethan Coen.\u00a0<strong>Ingmar Bergman\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0centenary is honoured by an ensemble of films, and\u00a0<strong>Sami van Ingen<\/strong>\u00a0has handpicked a selection of experimental films, which he also introduces to the audience.
