Director <\/span><b>Mahamat-Saleh Haroun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attracted a full audience to the School and made an impression with his warm personality and sharp social insights. After the discussion there was a screening of Haroun\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bye Bye Africa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An episode of <\/span><b>Dominik Graf\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Fahnder <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously unseen in Finland was screened at the Small Tent on Thursday. After the screening Graf discussed the current state of public television and the limits of the television format with his Finnish colleagues Tapio Piirainen and Neil Hardwick. The conversation gathered speed when Graf and Piirainen revealed that they hide political commentary into their work under the eyes of producers and financiers. The relaxed and outspoken conversation was filled with critical comments and bold humour. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Olaf M\u00f6ller\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selection of football films continued on Thursday with the Swedish classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fimpen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1974), in which the six-year-old protagonist, Little Johan, does not even know how to tie his shoes properly but still makes his way to the Swedish national team. In addition to Johan, the feel-good film features actual Swedish football stars of the time. \u201dWho of you has never thought \u2019oh my god, it would be so great if some catastrophy happens, and my team remembers me, and I will save them\u2019? This is essentially what our film is about\u201d, said M\u00f6ller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jennifer Barker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was invited to Sodankyl\u00e4 for the second time this year. Her Master Class <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delicious Catastrophes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consisted of eight short animation films from the sixties to eighties. The films illustrated the paradoxical nature of life via the ambiguity of animation &#8211; there is always a comic side even to disasters, failures and accidents. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The line to the first accompanied silent film of the festival was as long as every year. Composer and tenor saxophonist <\/span><b>Esa Pietil\u00e4 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought a whole new vigour to <\/span><b>Jean Vigo\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00c0 Propos de Nice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pietil\u00e4\u2019s skillful playing and inspired \u201csound effects\u201d delighted and amused the audience. The screening also included Vigo\u2019s revolutionary classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z\u00e9ro de conduite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Between the two films, Vigo expert <\/span><b>Nathalie Bourgeois <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the audience about Vigo\u2019s eventful life and the four films he made before his early death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revolutionary atmosphere continued at the Big Tent with the karaoke screening of <\/span><b>Jouko Aaltonen\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentary film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which took the audience back to the seventies and the world of protest songs. Familiar Sodankyl\u00e4 guest <\/span><b>Olavi Uusivirta <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the popular Finnish actress <\/span><b>Kristiina Halkola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the screening\u2019s pre-singers and received uproarious applause from the enthralled audience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish short films were a hit among the festival goers, with the late night short film screening at the Small Tent selling out. The selection included films such as <\/span><b>Terhi Kokkonen\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bellboy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Sasu Kerman\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">award winning documentary short <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Iron Man of The North.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The first morning discussion of this year\u2019s Midnight Sun Film Festival took place on the second festival day.
