The Midnight Sun Film Festival comes to a close this Sunday with eagerly awaited re-screenings. During the five festival days there were altogether 28 000 festival goers and 30 sold out screenings. The most popular screenings included the silent film concert <\/span>The Patsy<\/span><\/i> and the Hitchcock rarity <\/span>The Ring <\/span><\/i>(1927), which was a culmination of the sound artists\u2019 Master Class. The karaoke screenings and Guy Maddin\u2019s <\/span>The Green Fog <\/span><\/i>also sold out the Big Tent, for example. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s main guests were the legendary French actress <\/span>Bulle Ogier<\/b>, director <\/span>Barbet Schroeder<\/b>, whose films delve into the darker side of humanity, German director Dominik Graf <\/strong>captivated the audience with his extensive retrospective and the acclaimed Chadian director <\/span>Mahamat-Saleh Haroun<\/b>, whose potent refugee film <\/span>A Season in France<\/span><\/i> was this year\u2019s opening film, shaking the sold out Lapinsuu audience to the core. French director <\/span>Oliver Assayas <\/b>returned to Sodankyl\u00e4 to host a Master Class on Ingmar Bergman, while the younger generation of film directors was represented by Switzerland\u2019s <\/span>Anja Kofmel<\/b> and <\/span>Katherine Wyss<\/b> as well as the German director <\/span>Thomas Stuber<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year The Midnight Sun Film Festival hosted more Finnish filmmaker guests than ever before. <\/span>Kristiina Halkola<\/b> and <\/span>Eero Melasniemi<\/b> presented the essential sixties films <\/span>Girl of Finland <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Hot Cat?<\/span><\/i>, with Halkola also acting as pre-singer with <\/span>Olavi Uusivirta <\/b>at Thursday\u2019s supremely popular karaoke screening of <\/span>Revolution<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Tommi Korpela<\/b> and <\/span>Heikki Kujanp\u00e4\u00e4 <\/b>introduced the most popular Finnish films at this year\u2019s festival – <\/span>The Eternal Road <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Laugh or Die<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Kari V\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4nen <\/b>charmed the audience as Santa Claus in the New Zealand children\u2019s film <\/span>Kiwi Christmas<\/span><\/i>, while Finland\u2019s number one author <\/span>Kjell West\u00f6 <\/b>presented his favourite films in the festival\u2019s carte blanche Master Class. <\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The festival started on Wednesday morning with a film education matinee led by <\/span>Nathalie Bourgeois<\/b>. The often forgotten aspect of sound was a central theme at this year\u2019s festival with a Master Class, silent film concert and seminar focusing on sound in cinema. During Thursday\u2019s <\/span>The Sounds of Space in Cinema <\/span><\/i>seminar, the charismatic sound artist guests of the festival as well as researchers from the Sodankyl\u00e4 observatory discussed sound from artistic and scientific points of view. Throughout the festival, sound artists <\/span>Heikki Kossi, Nicolas Becker<\/b> and <\/span>Peter Albrechtsen <\/b>hosted screenings of their work ranging from <\/span>The Little Prince <\/span><\/i>to <\/span>Arrival<\/span><\/i>, and on Saturday culminated their Master Class with a unique silent film experience at the sold out Big Tent.<\/span><\/p>\n

German film critic <\/span>Olaf M\u00f6ller <\/b>once again hosted an eagerly awaited series of Master Classes. This year he had chosen the theme of football films, in connection with the World Cup that started at the same time as The Midnight Sun Film Festival. This year\u2019s Sodankyl\u00e4 Prize was awarded to <\/span>Ville Walo<\/b>, the man behind Helsinki\u2019s WHS Union arthouse cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival reaches its climax on Sunday with eagerly anticipated re-screenings. The audience voted to re-screen <\/span>Mikko M\u00e4kel\u00e4\u2019s<\/b> debut film <\/span>A Moment in the Reeds<\/span><\/i>, which had its Finnish premiere on the festival\u2019s opening day.<\/span><\/p>\n
